Changing your smartphone, selling or giving it away? Before formatting your old device, make sure to back up your data to avoid any loss. Here's how to do it quickly and efficiently.

Why is it important to back up?

Regular backups protect your data against:

  • Accidental loss (theft, damage, human error).
  • Phone changes.
  • Risks of cyberattacks or malware.

1. Backing Up Your Important Data

For Android users:

  • Go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data .
  • Select the data to back up: Photos, Contacts, Google Drive data, etc.

For iPhone users:

  • Go to Settings > gYour Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
  • Tap "Back Up Now" to start the process.

💡 Tip: With iOS 18, Apple offers an integrated password manager, making it easier to recover login information after a reset.

💡 Check your backup: Once the backup is complete, ensure all your important data (photos, apps, contacts, etc.) has been saved correctly.

2. Choosing Your Backup Method

Choose the backup method that best suits your needs:

Cloud Backup:

  • Android: Use Google Drive.
  • iPhone: Use iCloud.

Local Backup:

  • Android: Use tools like Samsung Smart Switch.
  • iPhone: Use iTunes or Finder (on macOS Catalina and later).

Manual Backup:

  • Transfer your photos and videos to a computer via USB.
  • Save important documents on cloud services like Google Drive or Dropbox.

💡 Tip: Cloud backup remains the fastest and simplest option.

3. Protecting Your Sensitive Information

Before resetting your device or giving it away:

  • Log out of all your accounts (Google, Apple ID, etc.).
  • Delete saved passwords in your browsers.
  • Erase personal files you do not wish to share.

Important Note: Some apps, like WhatsApp, Telegram, Luxtrust, MyGuichet, and your banking apps, will automatically log you out after the reset.

  • Ensure you have the necessary login credentials and recovery methods for these apps.

💡 Tip: Use the iOS 18 password manager or Google Password Manager on Android to securely save your credentials before resetting.

4. Formatting Your Device

Once your data is safely backed up, proceed to reset your phone to factory settings.

For Android:

  • Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
  • Enter your PIN/password to confirm.

For iPhone:

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Enter your Apple ID password to confirm.

5. After the Reset: Restoring Your Data

When setting up your new device or after resetting the old one:

  • Restore your backup: Choose to restore from your cloud or local backup during setup.
  • Reconnect your accounts: Log in to your essential apps and services.
    • Apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Luxtrust, MyGuichet, and your banking apps will require your login credentials.
    • For banking or administrative apps, additional verification steps (SMS codes, biometric authentication) may be necessary.
  • Reinstall and verify apps: Ensure all necessary apps are working correctly and your data is fully restored.
